  • Sunny or high altitude climates: people in sunny climates are more exposed to the sun in comparison to person’s living in colder places. This increases the risk of skin cancer as well.

  • Personal history: If you have had skin cancer before, it may return.

  • Exposure to certain substances: Certain substance like arsenic can also cause skin cancer.

Signs of skin cancer

As mentioned, there are different kinds of skin cancer. These cancers have different symptoms attached to them. However, there are a few common symptoms of skin cancer which if you notice, you should visit your doctor immediately.

  • New spots or existing spots that change shape, color, size etc.
  • Spots that form on areas that are not normally exposed to the sun.
  • Pre-cancerous skin lesions.
  • Bleeding and scabbing sores.
  • Painful skin lesions.
  • Dark lesions on the soles or the palms or in the mouth or near the rectal area.

Skin Cancer Prevention

Skin cancer can affect any person, even if they have not introduced themselves to the risk factors of skin cancer. You can use the following tips to reduce the risk of risk of skin cancer.

  • Avoid the sun during middle of the day: The middle of the day is when the sun is the most dangerous in respect of UV rays, therefore avoid going in the sun during that time.
  • Wear sunscreen: Sunscreen can help deflect a lot of bad radiation coming from the sun.
  • Wear protective clothing: Sunscreen do not always do the job, dress yourself in clothing that protects the major areas of your skin.
  • Avoid tanning beds: Tanning beds emit a lot of radiation which can cause skin cancer.
  • Be aware of sun sensitizing medication: Some common drugs can make your skin sensitive to the sun. Make sure you are aware of such medication and act accordingly.
  • Consult the doctor in case of any changes noticed: If you notice any changes on your skin which seems even a bit abnormal, consult your doctor immediately.
