Summer is the season when dehydration is commonly affecting the health of the elderly, infants and pregnant women. As the temperatures soar, even the fit individuals can feel dehydrated and tired because of the harsh sun rays.

Dehydration is nothing but loss of fluids in your body, especially water. This hampers normal functions of the body. You may start suffering from dehydration symptoms if you do not hydrate yourself immediately.

Although dehydration affects a certain age group first, if you do not consume enough waters especially during the summer, you are prone to getting dehydrated. Individuals who are physically active and exposed to the heat throughout the day are also prone to developing dehydration conditions.

If you are suffering from minor dehydration, it could be cured by intake of fluids at the earliest. As the condition gets serious, you could need medicines to heal. Below are a few causes of dehydration to help you understand this underrated ailment better.

Causes Of Dehydration

Basically, dehydration happens when the body fluids reduce to an amount that your body stops functioning normally. Body fluids reduce if you are not drinking water or other fluids regularly, lose fluids from your body or both.

Some other causes of dehydration are:

  • Diarrhea – Our body loses an excessive amount of water in Diarrhea. Dehydration is one of the severe symptoms of this disease, and it can also be fatal in some cases. Because of Diarrhea, our intestines are not able to absorb water which in turn affects their functioning.
  • Vomiting/Nausea – Similar to Diarrhea, vomiting is also responsible for losing water from the body. In fact, vomiting makes it difficult for the body to replace the lost fluids or store any other fluids in the body. The body loses on essential salt, mineral, and vitamin if vomiting is not controlled in time.
  • Excess of Sweating – Sweating is a natural way for our body to cool off. Excess sweating could lead to loss of fluids and salts in the body. It shows because of extreme humidity and hot weather, rigorous physical exercise and existing ailments like Diarrhea or Vomiting.
  • Urination – Your body loses fluids if the fluid intake is lower than the fluid lost. Existing ailments like diabetes and urinary tract infection could definitely cause frequent urination. If you are already showing symptoms of dehydration, these conditions could make it worse.

Dehydration Symptoms

The first common symptom of dehydration is the never satiating thirst. You will constantly feel thirsty if your body is losing fluids rapidly. Although dehydration cures easily if treated immediately, it could be difficult to gauge the seriousness of the condition.

To make it easier for you, we are making a list of other dehydration symptoms in adults and infants separately.

1. For adults:

  • Urine color – Dark colored urine is one of the significant dehydration symptoms. If you are constantly urinating a dark yellow-orange colored fluid, you are suffering from dehydration.
  • Dry mouth and tongue – You will experience a dry mouth even after drinking ample water.
  • Weakness – Low fluid level in your body could cause fatigue and weakness in your body. Your muscles grow weaker.
  • Headache – Your head starts aching if your body is not receiving enough fluids. A severe headache caused if you out on a sunny day; it is because of dehydration.
  • Blood pressure fluctuations – You lose essential salts in dehydration. This could lead to lowering your blood pressure suddenly.
  • Dry skin – You will start noticing your toes, fingertips, and lips getting dry because of dehydration. These are symptoms of severe dehydration cases and should not be ignored.

2. For infants:

  • Dry mouth – You will notice your baby’s mouth and tongue dry often.
  • Lack of tears – A baby has the habit of crying a lot. If yours start doing so without shedding any tears, he/she may be suffering from dehydration.
  • Irregular urination – In infants, If there is no urination for 3-4 hours at a stretch, it is a sign of dehydration.

Prevention Of Dehydration

Dehydration could be treated if paid attention immediately. On ignoring the symptoms, the condition could flare, and medical attention could be necessary. Either way, some prevention tips for dehydration are as follows:

  • Drink water – This is the best possible way to prevent dehydration of any extent. There is no other standard recommendation for treating dehydration. The number of water increases as per external factors like the temperature, humidity, etc.
  • Avoid excessive exercises – If you are already showing dehydration symptoms, prevent an excess of physical activities. Avoid going out in the sun until utmost necessary.
  • Eating habits – Change your food habits and increase intake of fruits and vegetables which have high water content. Cucumber, watermelon, citrus fruits, and grapes are a few examples of water-based fruits that can help increase your body’s fluid content.
  • Rest – If you are suffering from symptoms like headache or weakness, you need to rest well. On continued exertion to the body, you may fall unconscious or experience a stroke.

Dehydration is very common in the months of April and May. It is taken lightly by many individuals, but this condition may result in a serious health issue. If you are facing any of the symptoms mentioned above, start using prevention techniques as soon as possible. Keep drinking water and other summer drinks to keep your body cool and hydrated.
